ac compressor question

does anyone know why my ac compressor comes on and off when my ac is turned off?

The air conditioner will run automatically when the vent is switched to "defrost".

It is used to dry the air before it is heated to defrost the windshield.

thanks for the response. i guess i can start fixing all the leaks so my ac lasts more than a day and a half.
