ac is short cycling,is it bad for the compressor?

My tahoe has been making a "clicking sound" every 20 seconds since I bought it at the start of the last winter. After cranking my ac for the first time the other day and getting warm air im guessing its becuase the compressor needs freon. Has anyone used one of those ac recharge kits you can buy at autozone for 50 bucks. Does it work? Will it make the clicking stop? Also is it something that I should fix sooner then later? Just bought a house so im kind of broke atm.

They work only if you don't have a leak. They have some with stop leak already mixed in. If your trucks a keeper it's always worth a trip to a reputable radiator shop.
