Hey guys. I'm I'm new to the forums. Anyways I have an 02esky and one of my first mods was putting putting aftermarket hids. Right off the bat I had issues. One of the ballasts was no good. So I got another set and installed new ballast and everything has been fine till tonight. Now one headlamp won't come on. So I tried changing ballasts, bulbs, wiring, etc.... The only thing I can get it to do is flicker for a sec. I'm a mechanic/fabricator/Engine builder/tuner by trade. I have a pretty bad ass shop in San Diego so before I start messing with things, I'm hoping there is an easy solution.

Any yes I did search the forums first, alot of people having same issues from a long time ago but no real solutions. FYI, I have the 35w slim ballasts with built in relays. So if there is something I am not seeing, well I would love to learn something new. Haha. I'm just having a hard time thinking I got 3 bad ballasts of four total ballasts I purchased. Thanks for any input.

That's actually not that unusual considering the non existent quality control that goes into cheap chinese hid ballasts. Same goes for harnesses, relays, bulbs, etc. Some folks get lucky and they get a set that doesn't fail for a while, and others get a whole bunch of bad parts, and it all averages out in the end to about a 50/50 chance that something will fail sooner rather than later.

I'm not trying to diagnose the issue btw (I'm somewhat clueless when it comes to wiring), it might indeed be something you're doing from your end, I'm just noting that you shouldn't exclude the possibility, even the likelihood, that it is a parts issue.

I read your sticky. Alot of good info. Eventually I'm going to try to source some factory hids and install those. I bought my hid kit before I found out about this forum. Ddm tuning is about 15min from my shop. So it was easy. Lol

I'd move. :)

I'm just messin' ... hopefully it's something simple and you don't have to keep going back for more parts.

I have ddm's and no problems at all and they're cheap Chinese stuff. Only one of my fogs went bad cause I drove in a huge puddle. Instead of ordering just the bulbs for 15 bucks I ordered another kit for 35 and have some extra parts laying around in case something goes wrong.

Check the ground. Have you wired them directly to the battery to assure it isn't a installation error?

Cheap chinese crap. I've had tons of problems with all sorts of HIDs.

Biggest issue is our headlight connectors only put out about 10v at the connector. A lot of HIDs have problems with the voltage drop. The voltage drop is made even worse with the high power draw of HID kits. They draw a huge amount of power for just a split second to ignite the bulbs. This can be fixed by a relay harness or getting power directly from the battery.

I have also had a lot of HID kits act up in the cold and is even worse when combined with low voltage.

The other main problem, Chinese junk :flame:
