Just the other day I was using my ac as normal when I heard a weird noise, then my ac wasn't cold anymore. I figured that my belt had snapped.

When I got to work I checked it out and indeed the belt did snap. So I replaced it with a new one. I thought this would fix the problem but.....

I turn the ac on and after a few seconds it tries to kick in but it almost stalls my car, then the ac turns off. This happens all in about 2 seconds. If I don't turn the ac switch off it will do this over and over.

I'm figuring a new compressor will be needed. Before I do this any advice? I have found some for around $300 and I have a ac recharging machine at my work so I'm covered there. Anybody else have a similar issue or ever had to replace their compressor?

Thanks

yes i have had my compressor replaced, because it was making an awful crunching/scraping noise, and eventually broke the belt. Unfortunatley it is happening again......I was told by the mechanic the first time that the condensor was also recccomended for replacement anytime the compressor was replaced, but I said no. So maybe think about the condensor too...dont know if it was BS or not but i didnt have the money. and I replaced with an oem compressor

yea sounds like the compressor seized. Try to find a compressor that is ready to install. sometimes, when you get a compressor, its just a compressor. No pulley etc.. Depending on where you get it from you may have to transfer parts over.

Definately sounds like the compressor is locked up. I would also make sure to replace the orifice tube and make sure there isn't a bunch of metal in it or the system might need to be flushed out good to get rid of any metal that could damage the new compressor.

Ok so I have been reading a lot concerning replacing only one component of the AC because of any debris.

At my job we have ac recharge machine, and I basically can use it as much as I need so will recharging it a few times take care of this issue?

Thanks for the input!

No, the A/C machine cannot clean the debris from the system. Remove the orifice tube and see if there is any debris in it, if there isn't any metal debris in it then you may be alright without a flush (if this is the case still replace the orifice tube). If there is, especially if there is a good bit, you will need to replace the orifice tube and accumulator and flush the rest of the system. Here a little info I found with a quick Google search about the flushing:

haha my buddies a/c pump in his s10, was on and we smelt something bad, the thing lit on fire haha was kinda funny, seized the pully and was glowing bright red... haha was awsome... that will happen if you try and use your a/c pump and hear the clutching/kining in nose... let it go to long and yeah...
