Compare your tach rpm to your scanner rpm. Signal sources different. Big Clue.
Also, monitor as much as you can live data. Why I suggested tha MAF disconnect. Almost done.

east 302 and all the other responders - thank you, you've been very helpful- and patient.
My scanner is a very basic 100 buck job and so it doesn't do a lot, and you have to really search to find what it does have.

What I have found with it today;
I now have a P0507 ("IAC System, RPM higher tan expected") and it is - 1290 RPM
EVAP System, Leak Test Failed
MAP= 8.4 to 8.7 inches Hg (I think that is normal, right?)
MAF reports 1.8 lbs/min (seems OK)
Absolute Throttle Position 0.0% to 0.4% (again, this should be OK as well)

To me, it looks like the EVAP System is the place to start. Cant see an obvious break in the line, also can't figure how to get the little white 'circlips' off to remove the line. There is a metal line back to, I assume, the gas tank so I doubt it has a hole. That leave the line just mentioned and the valve it terminates into......so far as I can see. I don't think the heater line is part of the EVAP system, is it?

One thing on the IAC, prior to swapping the 'spider', the truck would start instantly when cold and not run for a few days. When warm or driven the day before it would need to turn over for 3 to 5 seconds.

Tach and scanner RPM appear equal.
Disconnecting MAF - had a momentary drop in RPM when diconnected but then stabilized at about 1300. Later disconnects did nothing.

What was the code for the evap system? I’d probably ignore it for now and go with the P0507. Here are the diagnostics for it. Since you don’t have a tech2 or similar scanner, you can probably make some assumptions on the ‘yes’ and ‘no’ answers and just check through the options. The resistance at the IAC terminals, for example, would probably be worthwhile.

If I was wanting to shotgun a part, it would be the IAC valve.

SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!!

It was a bum IAC after all, operating but didn't have a complete range of motion.

Can't thank you all enough, your help was invaluable.

My code reader still indicates a few things left to reset, apparently I have to di a few drive cycles, I'll get to that next. (CAT, EGR, and that EVAP)

Keep clearing codes with scanner until your drive cycle completes. (write them down). Check your evap line is correctly plugged- these don't usually have problems. Glad you fixed it.
After a week or two, If nothing else comes up, Add "SOLVED" to the Title line of post to help the next guy.

Roger.
The evap line to the canister from the purge valve was checked this week, fine. No obvious cracks in the canister.
I'll remember to solve it!
