an interesting interior mod, i need help with

so i have that "cubby hole" in the front consol under the center HVAC vent. Nothing seems to fit and stay in there and i have seen some neat mods done there, one guy even put a Garman Nuvi in there, turnred out REALLY nice.

i dont need Navi though... Im a GD MAN!!! haha

so i want to install a standard plug (power outlet) power inverter there so i can plug my cell phone or whatever else in there. I have the unit i want to use, its the standard unit that plugs into the ciggy lighter.

Can i hard wire this thing in to the back behind the cig lighter? or does the plugg itself have a saftey feature built in? I dont want to set my truck on fire or start poping fuses left and right and ******* things up.

The plug might have a fuse in it, that's all I can think of.

I don't see why you can't hard-wire something into the cig wires? A friend of mine did a Navi in his sunglasses compartment as a flipdown deal, he hardwired into the dome light I think.

I actually have a Cig Lighter adapter that gives me 3 ports and a USB port - useful for charging my phone - that fits right in that cubby. It's on my to-do list to remove the faceplate, fab a new one that fits that space well, and permanently install it. (I want to add some LED's as well to help light up the cup holder area at night, that's what's holding me up. Need to figure that part out to get power to the LED's, as well as how to switch them. I digress...)

When you look at the plug, you should be able to tell if there's a fuse in there or not. If it comes apart easy, like twists into 2 pieces, there's a fuse. If that's the case, I'd think as long as you splice a fuse in line when you install, you'll be golden. Even if there's not, it doesn't hurt to put a fuse in for peace of mind. But as far as any kind of inverter or what have you in the plug - naw, shouldn't be anything there. Just a fuse.

i dont put shit in there as it always falls out upon acceleration

I just want to do something usefull with the space and the only other sweet mod i have seen is putting that Garmin Nuvi in there, it fits perfectly and looks pretty nice. I just dont see myself ever using it. i am going to leave a little room for a switch though, as i have hopes of puttin the hoe on the bottle eventually

For us simpler folks, pieces of that grippy foam rubber drawer liner work great. I removed the OEM pad in there and swapped it with the liner and stuff now stays in the cubby. It also worked great on the console door. Everything stays in place despite Michigan pot holes. I used wide 2-sided carpet tape to mount the liner material.

i run my sat and my gps off of the cig lighter plugs in the front of the console, never popped a fuse yet.

Get the inside measurements of the cubby. I stole my son's building blocks (big lego blocks) and stuck them to the back of the circular plate that came with the Tom Tom. This will prevent the plate from falling and moving. Remove the front dash panel and put the plate in the cubby. Replace the front panel. The plate is now "sandwiched" by the cubby and the front panel.

You can also run a power supply through the cubby for a cleaner look.
