Block heaters are great, but slightly unnecessary in chicago, doesn't really get cold enough around here and if your battery is in proper working order should have no problem starting.

But if you want to put one on still my preferred kind is this http://www.amazon.com/Kats-13100-Aluminum-Circulating-Heater/dp/B000BO8X9K

I have used these before and they are simple to install, just go inline with heater hose and can be run all night if you want. does a better job than the oil pan heaters in my opinion because they completely heat the engine due to the circulation part.

I heard last winter was really wicked in Chicago with bitter cold, and have read comments that this winter might be the same there. (hope I'm wrong)

There's of course a number of factors that will be different for different folks and the conditions their vehicle sees.

Commonly, after a vehicle sits overnight, starting in the morning can be a struggle, and if one has a garage (like I did in Chicago), this sure helps quite a bit.

I can of course remember from many memories living in Chicago, and Wisconsin, the sun is shining, it is midday, and the thermometer is reading -7 to -12. Brutal! Even a brand new battery is working hard, but one that is 3 or more years old can fail you at the most inconvenient time.

One day fine, and the next day dead.

Jumper Cables are always a wise thing to have on hand. Always had them in my vehicles, and always tried keeping a full tank of gas, less chance of fuel line freeze from condensation.

Last winter here was wicked, but my truck sits outside it's whole life and has never had a problem starting, then again it's properly maintained. Even before I added the second battery I have never had a problem.
