AC wasn't getting the truck cold quickly enough, so I bought one of those low side gauges to see what was going on. As soon as I removed the low side cap, I heard a small pop and could see that the schrader valve was hissing slightly. So there's a leak there. Went ahead and hooked up the gauge, and it immediately went up to the above green area (between 60 and 70 psi). This is with max ac selected, and the compressor clutch is engaged. When I pulled the gauge off the low side, the valve was leaking even more.

So obviously the schrader valve needs to be replaced -- does that thing just screw out of there or does the housing need to be replaced too? I hope not -- it looks expensive. And any ideas why the pressure would be so high on the low side? Maybe the compressor isn't compressing? It is really hot here at the moment -- when I was working on the truck ambient temp was probably 105 at least.

I'm about to call some AC places but I wanted some more info before I do. I don't have a vacuum pump so an AC place is going to be needed at some point during this operation.

Edit: it is a 99 tahoe with the rear ac option.

Yeah that schrader valve just screws in, no biggie but you will loose all the pressure and R134a gas you have in there now. It's the same valve that is in the valve stem in your tires or on a bicycle tube ... Can't tell you why the pressure is so high, I'm not an AC expert.

It's gotta be hotter then 105 in Vegas, I'm in Kingman and it said 110 on my way home.

Yeah it might have been hotter out there. I know it was around 110 a bit earlier in the afternoon.

So any AC experts out there care to comment on the high low side pressure? I know the compressor is functioning, since with the AC off the low side pressure goes off the scale (which I would expect). But with max ac selected it pretty much stays at 65 psi or so, which is well above the green zone. And of course I have no idea how much refrigerant is in the system, since I do not know how long the valve has been leaking.

you got to be careful with this stuff. Really should take it to a ac shop have it evacuated, valve replaced and charged with dye to see is there is any leaks in the system. Mishandled ac can cause frost burns or damage your eyes.

Yeah I am not planning on working on it while it has a charge!
