What size boat? Tower speakers? What size speakers in the boat's interior? Budget? If this is too off topic for this sub forum, PM me with all of this stuff and I'll help you out.

Definitely go for a dual deep cycle battery setup if you plan to do a high power system.

ok so here goes...I have a 20' Hurricane deck boat and it is currently set up with a cheap Jensen 4x40 with only 2 speakers. it sounds "ok" when sitting still but I can't hear it when moving, or it gets too distorted. I want to add more speakers but am a total newb when it comes to all the technical aspects. I'd really like to make it 4 speakers and a sub but if I can just do 4 speakers that i can hear while running that would suffice for now. My budget is pretty low unforunately, but I have a little wiggle room.

With the HU being 4x40 what speakers should I stick with. The manual says 4ohm or less. i was looking at a set of 200w, would they work? I probably should get an amp right? What should I look for...

Thanks and feel free to email me if it's too detailed or long :) [email protected]

What's your budget? If you want to hear it while driving, an amp will be necessary. Does your head unit have amp pre outs? I've seen very cheap marine decks that don't have pre outs, making hooking up an amp more difficult. If it doesn't, I'd buy a cheap one with pre outs and be done with it. It'll make things much easier in the future.

The HU probably only puts out about 10W RMS, and that would explain why it distorts as soon as you turn it up enough to hear it. Without knowing speaker size, I can't recommend any replacement speakers. Assuming what you have isn't blown, you can replace them in the stock locations, then amp the ones you currently have in a different location in the boat.

For an amp, this will be a good start.

If you can find the speaker size, it'll make them easier to replace. For the additional speakers you want to add, depending on the location, you may be able to put whatever size you want. Ideally, you'll want 4 6.5s amp'd, and then a 10" or 12" sub. In a boat, speaker mounting can be pretty flexible, they can be flushed into panels, or mounted in boxes, basically any flat surface with adequate mounting depth can be used to mount up the speakers.

You could probably build a box for the sub to tuck it up under the dash or under some other location where it won't be in the way. The biggest thing is that you MUST secure the amp(s) and sub(s) very well, I don't know how your lake is, but I've had days on my boat where we've taken waves hard enough to break gauges out of their mounting holes in the dash. Having an unsecured sub box in a situation like that could be very dangerous, if the amp is poorly mounted it could break free and put stress on the wires. The last thing you want is your power and ground arcing because a wave knocked them free from the amp.

Thanks Ryan...the HU is Jensen MSR4050G. I'm not exactly sure what the speakers are but I know they are not blown because they are good when not underway... I just have no power going to them, so I guess I need an amp. I do see an RCA out on the back of the harness so that would be my pre amp out correct?

I may get a higher quality set (4) of new speakers and see if that covers it before jumping into amps and subs etc.

Thanks :)

After taking a look through the manual online, I'm not sure what the RCAs are for. They make mention of the RCAs in the manual but don't specify their use.

Assuming they're pre outs, that I amp I linked would work well. With 2 sets of these speakers, http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_18612_MB-Quart-NKF-116-NKF116.html, and then an amp/sub would be good.

I'd start with amping the 6.5" speakers first, and then add an amp and sub later. I'm not sure if that amp I linked supports daisy chaining, if it doesn't, you'll need one that does because your head unit only has one set of pre outs (assuming that's what the RCAs are).
