Does anyone have a write up on how to replace the front axel seals or a write up on a servo, which is giving me the "service 4wd" message. I have had the same problem three previous times, each of which cost me >$600.00.
Also, if anyone has a part number for the servo I would appreciate it.

the front axle seals are fairly easy..

-DRIVER SIDE-
-take off wheel
-then remove the 6 bolts around the cv shaft/ axle shaft

- using a rubber mallot hit out the axle shaft itself.
-once the shaft is out the seal will need to be pried out (it will still be on the truck) i used a screw driver. not the smartest thing to use but all i had.
-once out just replace with new seal and put everything back together.

-PASSENGER SIDE-
-take the wheel off
-remove 6 bolts from cv shaft and axle shaft.
-then remove the axle shaft tube that connects to the front diff. (i dont remember how many bolts) but i believe its 5 or 6.

the bolts in the upper right of pic.
-becareful when removing the tube so that the inner pieces dont fall out. (they did on me, but i just youtubed how they went back in)
- you should be at this point now

-the seal is facing up in the picture, so you will just need to remove it.
-once new one is installed just put back together.

i dont remember what size bolts they are. i almost want to say 11 or 12 but at the same time that seems wrong to me. each one might have taken me an hour, but thats mostly because it was the 1st time ive done them so it was a learning experience.

hope this helps some. good luck

They are not too bad honestly. Very good post on how to do them. One thing to ad, the passenger side you will need Anarobic sealer for the install.

What is Anerobic sealer? Since I will have the axles apart, would it be a good time to replace CV boots and bearings?

TIMKEN makes a kit with the bearings and seals, or it looks like I can purchase the seals individually.

Another question or two or four:
1. What do you think about replacing the bearings along with the axle seals(135000 miles)?
2. Timken has a kit which includes everything.
3. Besides the anerobic sealant will I need any fluids?
4. how about any special tools?

Thanks
