The ACRS. A hodgepodge of off the shelf with new. 1000 made. One is locally owned.
That was early 70s.
Your 1960s may be a little early for public release. Certainly stuff can be in production for years.. and shelved.
Seatbelts were before that. Patents back to the 1800s IIRC.. but NHTSA and the Ralph Nader thing of the 60s and 70s took things off paper and into production.
Public not wanting them is a tough thing to argue. I won't speculate.
Lee was against the airbags. He changed his mind decades later.
