I installed mine just tapping into both reverse bulb socket wires. Should I have used a ground somewhere?

One of those should have been the ground so you're good. I was going to splice there but I like having the option of viewing the camera anytime the stereo is on.
Also, I've been looking around and the only 3rd brake light camera I can find is made by HMI international and it basically points straight down so it's basically showing the same view as my camera that is under the lift gate. I think I'll just get a 3rd brake light from a junkyard and experiment with adding a camera to it.
