On my 07, the wire harness was apparently badly corroded. I had it replaced at the dealer under my extended warranty. Works every time now!

My 07 gets moody every now and then with the backup camera. Of course it chose to do it for the first time in about 2 years when I replaced the head unit with an Alpine x009. I felt horrible spending hours on the phone with tech support for the interface thinking it was a problem on their end, when the problem the entire time was on the truck. Sure enough I opened the rear liftgate closed it and everything came back.

I just had this happen on my 09 LTZ Tahoe. I just got the truck used about 6 weeks ago so I have no idea on the history of the truck. It worked fine on the multiple test drives and for about 6 tanks of gas and then yesterday I had the back of the truck up in the air to put in a leveling kit (springs, shock extenders, autoride links) and when I lowered it down and went to test drive it, the screen was black.

Today I took the head unit out and checked all the wiring and it looked fine. All connectors tight, etc. I took all the connectors off and completely removed the head unit and put it back in, powered it back up, still black screen in reverse.

I put the parking brake on and put it in reverse and, with the head unit sitting on the cup holder area, pulled on and twisted around the wiring going into the head unit while it was on and powered up, no change, still black screen.

Then I was putting it all back together, and for one split second, the screen came on and went back to black.

I tried all sorts of stuff for an hour or so like more playing with the wiring, opening and closing the hatch glass and liftgate, unplugging the head unit and plugging it all back in in different orders, tapping the camera and around the head unit, etc. The screen stayed black.

So when people say there is a connection that gets corroded, where is this? I am inclined to think the head unit and camera are OK on mine and that there is a connection or wiring issue somewhere.

Thanks in advance!

I took mine to the dealership and as I understand it's the camera assembly in the tailgate. I'm not 100% sure though.

Ok, I will check that next.

As an update, when I got up today and backed out of my garage, it worked again for a second or so initially but has been black screen ever since. I hadn't made the connection (no pun intended) until now, but being in Minnesota, it has recently become very damp with our first rains of the season. This could be exacerbating a corroded connection issue and why it just now acted up.

Mine is also intermittent when we have huge temperature/humidity swings or tons of snow. Positive that it is in the tailgate assembly where that problem exists.

Mine was intermittent for a week or so before just staying black. Would love to find a fix but don't want to go to the dealer for it.

Mine worked this AM but is back to a black screen again after driving in to work.

I am hoping to get in there (the liftgate) and check it out tonight. If I find anything I will take pics.

Well I tore into it last night and in the end I found nothing and fixed nothing. The wiring and connectors inside the lift gate and on the outside in the appliqué all are in very good shape with no corrosion or pin fitment issues. The camera itself looked fine as well.

So at this point I have to go with either the camera itself having an issue, or the head unit. Since the camera can be had for much cheaper than the head unit, I will start with replacing it first. Ordered one off eBay for $80 shipped. Should be here this weekend.

On a side note, I could not get the appliqué off as the studs just spun inside it and the nuts would not loosen. I am guessing this is common the way it is designed. I ended up carefully prying on the camera housing with a plastic trim removal tool and got it to pop off. It is held on by some plastic welds that I ended up breaking loose to get it off. Then you can slide it out and unplug the connector that I am guessing is the one that would get corroded. It looked fine though. I was able to put it back together so I could drive it today and it should be fine putting the new one in when it gets here. The camera worked half of the times I went into reverse today, so something is still very wrong.
