Hi guys, I am in newbie to the GMC line. I searched around and couldn't find an answer so was hoping to get some insight.

I was wondering if there is a way to have the backup camera on while pulling forward into the garage. It makes it easier to know the position of the car without doing the tennis ball hanging from the ceiling trick. The fit is very snug1454468146413-1828807157.jpg and I want to avoid smashing into something on the front end. Lately I have just been pulling forward, throwing it in reverse for a moment to check my position and then adjusting. Not terrible but just trying to find if there is another way.

I'm a little confused. Before you enter the garage, put it in park, then reverse (let the reverse camera turn on) then forward (so now the front camera is on) - now your front camera is on for the entire duration while you're pulling into the space.

Or, do you want to really see the backup image (from the tailgate) while you're driving forward - this I believe cannot be accomplished

Not sure on the newer trucks especially with factory equipment. Instead of using the reverse light for triggering/power use a constant switched power source.

For example. I have the factory reverse camera in the mirror and it comes on when put into reverse. I wired my camera to be on all the time that I am able to look at my backup(or front) through my double din at anytime.

Issue is newer trucks, the camera image is in the center NAV screen so would be distracting (to me) to have an image there all the time plus you'd lose the ability to use the screen.

BTW, my results were based on what I do with an Escalade to get the camera to engage.

That's all in the wiring. Could put a toggle switch for power to the camera. Another way to do it would get another screen and mount it elsewhere. It would be independent from the factory system. There is more than one way to accomplish this.

I wish the timeout on the rear camera was longer. I use the rear camera as you do--to pull in the garage. Yu can specify "Rear Camera Delay", but the timeout is too short.

My wife's explorer rear camera can be set to something like 30 seconds--great for this usage. The Tahoe is like only 5 seconds...

One of the things Ford does better, IMO..

Bump...

Nothing new on this yet? An aftermarket module? Anything?

Hmm -- I have a tight fit as well. On my 2017 Yukon Denali I used the collision sensors & tennis ball string from the roof... It does the trick every time. I looked at other solutions but the other options don't have the fidelity of a moving tennis ball.

Sorry I don't have an answer for the OP. Reading through this thread adds another thing I'm not crazy about on the newest generation suvs. Granted, my 2006 didn't come with a backup cam stock, but when I bought a new clarion head unit I bought one specifically that came bundled with a backup cam. I do plan to order another cam so I can forward mount it, but the backup cam is available any time I want. It automatically comes on in reverse, but then I can hit the shortcut on my main screen and go right to the camera and I can leave it on, even driving forward. I don't understand why GM's setup on the new trucks wouldn't allow for that. Or allow the timeout to be set longer. For the money you guys spent on these suvs that should be already programmed in, not an aftermarket unlock you have to buy separately. Kinda lame. Anyways just my 2 cents. Lol
