One tip to the fluid change linked above.

Before removing the pan. Use the tube at the radiator to drain the 4 quarts thats in the pan.
Dont refill it.

Then remove the now empty pandas and change filter. Once pan is back on. Continue with the drain and fill method linked above.


Thats the method I use. If your not changing the filter. You wont get so much as a drop of fluid on you and it takes aprox 20 mins to finish.

It's OK to have your trans flushed if you wought the vehicle new and do it routinely.

What you don't want to do is flush it if it has never had the ATF changed or if you are not sure if it was changed regularly.

Flushing the transmission in a vehicle at 150K+ miles :

1) says you think there is a problem with the transmission (and there probably is!)
2) Will (7 times out of 10) kill the trans within 5000 miles.

We do flushes rarely at our shop. If a customer wants to do it at high mileage, we have them first understand what may happen and why and then sign a waiver saying they understand the risks.

Ac Delco or NGK plugs, wires are wires, havoline/valvoline/or mobil... with oil if it comes out of the jug dark its ****** (aka castor, pennzoil, quaker state.) Do not put any seafoam, kerosene or anything else in a engine before a oil change, you loosen all of the sludge and buildup and it gets in the notorious roller lifters and everything else and will cause nothing but problems in higher mileage engines, run a decent 10w30 and thats all you should need to do.

Castrol EDGE Black 5w30 is great oil. It is the recommended oil in many cars from the factory. If it comes out of the jug dark it is crap oil? Really? Please enlighten me on this.

10w30? That's not the spec oil viscosity. 5w30 is what you want to run.

Nothing wrong with doing an oil flush every once in a while. It's bad to do only if you have sludge already from poor maintenance. The sludge gets loosened up and clogs passages and the pick up strainer thus starving bearings and other crucial tight oil-clearances of oil. This wears the parts and eventually they will fail.

5w30 is too thin for a motor with mileage on it. These 5.3 engines are bad about lifters going bad (busted roller on mine at 280,000). Every engine has sludge in it at that mileage, may not be as much depending on servicing. Just like a 4L60(lipping after fluid change). if it aint broke don't fix it, only thing you'll do is break other things.

Seafoam (in engine for a week before oil change).

do you dump the whole can in? and is there any negatives to running it in the oil for a week? or approximately how many miles would you run this? i run 60 miles round trip to work each day, so thats alot of time for the sea foam to be in the motor
