On my most recent oil change the tech showed me the power steering fluid, and it is totally burned out and black, so a change is needed. Its' a 2011 Yukon XL 5.3, with 154k on the clock, to be honest I think it's the original fluid.

#1 - Take it to a shop for a flush

#2 - Turkey Baster method

The steering definitely feels heavy, should there be a noticeable difference once its' changed out?

Neither. Get a fluid transfer pump from your local shop. Get a used milk jug. Get a gallon of new power steering fluid. Pump out the old, move the hoses, pump in the new. Drive it around, do it all over again. After the first road test, I just went to turning the steering wheel lock to lock in between pumping out the fluid. Dont use the turkey baster, its soooo messy.

I looked for the return line around back of the steering pump, removed it. And capped off the fitting on the pump. Jacked up the truck, turned the wheels lock to lock without the truck running and pumped out all the old fluid. No mess, no fuss. Filled the resevior up and repeat until fluid is clean looking. Then reinstalled the return line. This way I removed fluid from the steering rack, lines and pump.

If I can clear up any confusion let me know

Youtube has videos of the process for silverado suburbans and such

I used a fluid transfer pump to get as much as old fluid out. Then I added new fluid and kept moving steering wheel around. Changed that fluid out and added more. I kept doing this until the fluid I took out was clear. Somewhat similar to changing transmission fluid.
