Bicycles on the roof rack?

Any cyclists out there? I have the factory roof rack with cross bars and was wanting to haul a road and mountain bike without having to pay $300 for Thule/Yakima's outrageously priced stuff. Any ideas??

Can you weld? If so make a rack for them

Ha, if I could weld I wouldn't be asking. I actually found an inexpensive bracket that I can bolt to the cross member, I just have to pull the front wheels off when transporting.

Yeah, I have the Yakima blockhead mounted in my pickup, I was planning on just bolting one of those to the roof rack cross piece.
