black box on rear bumper

so I have had my tahoe for about a month now and just noticed the little black box nest to the license plate! I opened it to find a lock of some sort that uses a key?! what is it used for?

I'm not 100% sure but I think that is where you lower your spare tire?

It is a lock so that no one can steal your spare tire. Put your key in there and unlock it. You should be able to pull the entire lock right out. That is where you access your spare tire. See your jack stand tools for instructions.

I recommend figuring out how this works before you need to change a flat on the road. Remember -- If you are running drop spindles, the stock 16 inch rim (that is the typical spare) will not fit on the front.
