Going to replace rear caliper on my truck. Prob not had a system bleed in a time. How long should it take for me and a pedal pusher (2nd person) to bleed that system, all 4 corners. How much brake fluid should I expect to use?

it takes as long as it takes for you to pull off each wheel and bleed each caliper and re mount the wheel.

id say 15 minutes per wheel if your not goofing off.

i built a one man bleeder, even with a helper it will speed things up, as the helper can now tell the pedal pusher when he sees clear fluid in the tube.

Don't forget to put a piece of wood on the floor so your helper can't push the pedal all the way to the floor or you risk damaging the master cylinder.

I've never heard of damaging the mc doing it this way before. Could it rupture the internal diaphram by pushing too hard?

i hear this over and over, ( not just here either) not once have i ever had a issue pushing the pedal to the floor.

its said the seal is pushing further in the bore then its used to, maybe hitting dirt inside? idk, but the master can start to leak, or fail its said.

been pushing to the floor for 35 years. never had this happen to me.

I always heard to stop before you hit the floor so I always have so I don't know why it's supposed to be risky. I'd rather not take chances and people say if you have an inexperienced helper you should put something down there. I think lightly hitting the floor is ok but if you hit it too hard you can mess up the mc. IDK. I stopped doing it that way and went with a Motive pressure bleeder and I'll never go back. Complete system bleed in minutes, no helper needed, fluid automatically tops itself off. Win.

The logic behind this is that, considering brake fluid is hygroscopic, the piston rod can become corroded overtime from continuous exposure to the fluid. Therefore pushing the piston rod past its normal range of travel could allow the corroded section of the rod to chew up the bore seal, thereby causing a leak. I’ve never personally encountered this problem so it may be a mechanic’s urban legend of sorts BUT the logic behind it seems sound. Just my $0.02
