The family is going to try the “glamping” side of the world this summer. We typically tent camp but this time rented a 27’ pull along.

The rental place said I need a brake controller in order to pull their trailer.

My SSV has the tow package, hitch 7 pin and the selectable tow button on the shifter.

Is there a stock controller I can add to the truck?
If so wiring under the dash what do I look for?
Do I need to get the computer(s) programmed to work with the stock controller?
Is the infamous green wire with a ring terminal under the hood need to be connected &&& to where?

I going to see if the stock controllers are still available online once I get home from this business trip this weekend.

I would recommend a Tekonsha P2 Controller. Whatever you pick, get a proportional controller (not time-delayed).

The pigtail with the four brake controller wires may be tucked up under the dash, ready to connect to the wire pigtail that comes with your controller. It may take some digging to find it. You'll need to look at it to see if it has a connector on it; if it does, see this link and look for a controller:

If your truck came with the trailer wiring option you can use the pigtail with both connectors.

If you have another style or brand of controller, use that site to find the controller and the recommended pigtail. They can be had with both or without one of the connectors.

you will need a aftermarket one like Fless mentioned (easy to do), you won't get a oem one wired up without a enormous headache and yanking half the harness out and replacing it, even then it would be a challenge, harness to the transmission would need to be changed and who knows what else

Thanks for the info, from what I’m seeing this is the route to go.

It’s amazing how all this changed. I had a cateye Silverado. It was easy peasy to plug n play. Now you gotta do all this stuff just to connect a stock brake controller. Yeesh

I thought my '04 was easy. Just splice in the correct pigtail under the dash, mount the controller, and plug in a fuse or two. No real wiring needed, it was all there.
