talked to the diff shop today and they said ONLY if you use 4wd will you have to change the front out as well otherwise you can use the lower gear in 2wd just fine

Let me clarify this for everyone:

You can run different gears from front to rear ONLY with the non-autotrac trucks (little auto 4x4 button to the left of the steering wheel). Certain years of autotrac will work but you'll have to verify which transfercase you have as gm put several in these truck most common is the NP246 autotrac. Autotrac transfercases will have a slip yoke in the front shaft where the non-autotrac cases (np241, np243, etc.) have a fixed yoke front shaft, you can also note the tag on the rear of the case to confirm the case model # but the best means of determining if you can swap only the rear gears w/o issue would be as follows:

Turn the engine off with the case in 2wd and the transmission in park
Get under the truck and try to turn the front shaft
You're cool if the front shaft spins freely, if not you'll need front and rear gears or you'll kill the tcase

for sure, thanks Max for the info, that's GREAT info, didn't know that :D

the more I think about it, I may just keep these....the need for more is haunting me :)

Not that good of and Idea if you are driving alot. Just do what Max said and find out if you have Auto-trac or not.


Blue If this were in a couple weeks I would snag these up in a heart beat I need gears extremly bad. Stocks and 35's are killing me. Just started working again and wont start getting paid untill the 15th :( Goodluck with your Family stuff!! Very Stand up thing you are doing!!

thanks Adam, he's doing much better now....matter of fact he traded off his Honda ( thank goodness) for a 90 5.0 LX Mustang...so he finally wised up again :D
as soon as he get's back on his feet, time for some son/father build time on a new toy. :D

Glad he is doing better!! I wish I lived close enough to my Father so that we could spend time toogether finish up on the 65 ford project we have :(

well i have two boys, one 20 and one 18, this is my 20 year old and he's into cars and drag racing like me...youngest is girls and sports, so far, so good :)
