have you pulled the valve covers yet? they're easy enough just grab a set of valve cover gaskets before you do - usually theyll stick/stretch and need to be replaced anyway. a head gasket wouldnt usually be the source of an oil leak. leaves coils on the brackets and remove the entire bracket as one. turn the engine over and see if the lifters are opening the valves

only problem with preparing for future cam is if you have afm lifters youll want to get rid of them now, which means youll need a new cam now. I used LS9 gaskets and cheap (chinese) head studs theyre only marginally better stock head bolts though. if you just want get thru it cheap i would throw on some GM blue beehives good for .570 i think will be good for plenty of mild cams. and trunion upgrade.

it snowballs out of hand pretty quick lol

I havent done valvle covers yet. That was my next step since i recently discovered oil on the side of the block. You said head gasket wouldnt be the culprit for oil on the side of the block but would it be for the misfire? Im guessing it might be a lifter but im not to familiar with these things, i just know the basics of a diy mechanic.
Afm is when the truck turns off cylinders right? How would i find out about that? As far as i know it isnt equiped with that but i would like to double check. VIN indicates i have an L92 which by what i have reasearched isnt AFM but i might be wrong. What brand dou you guys hear good things about that wont break the bank on head studs? Ive heard alot about ARP but im assuning they are overkill for a mild cam and headders.

Some of the very earliest L92s had AFM hardware but it was not activated by the computer. I think the cut off was April of 2005 or 2006, forget which date. So if your truck is one of the very earliest, it might have AFM. Quick way to tell is to look at your valley cover under the intake, if flat you don't have it. If it looks lumpy, you got it.

Im like 90% sure its flat but ill take a second look as soon as i get home.
Ok so once i get the valve cover off what am i looking for? Id figure broken or loose parts, marring on mating surfaces and exsesive play in parts, is there anything im missing?

Yep just start by grabbing all the rockers and giving them a wiggle, should be very little if any play in them, making sure no broken valve springs no metal shavings etc

Ok, so i took valve covers off and took the fuel pump fuse out. Looked around and everything looks intact. Rockers have a little side wiggle but from what i could feel none vertically. I especially checked #8 and felt the same, little side wiggle to where i can make it "tap" but nothing more. I cranked it and both rockers on #8 look to operate normally as do all the others. Valve covers seem to have small cracks but no missing parts. Whats next? Take heads off? Im thinking about seeing if i can test each individual coil just to double check. how would i do that?
