Hey guys, so I got my 02 Tahoe a couple
days ago and on the tailgate there is about a 6 inch circle where the paint is peeling and bubbling.

I'm thinking about taking it into a body shop and having them fix it but I am scared of the cost. Does anyone have an estimate on how much it would be? Would they have to paint the whole thing or just be able to do that part.
Thanks!

I am by no means a paint pro but i think they can just paint the area and blend it in to match.

If there`s not a lot of rust under there it shouldn`t be too bad on price but they`ll have to pull the wiper arm out to do the job and if it was my truck i`d have the body shop remove that horribly ugly wiper and patch the hole.

It looks so much cleaner and i never use the wiper anyway.

I've got the same issue on my 02 'Hoe (as well as driver side door rust on the bottom). Please tell me what happens. I would not remove the wiper blade, but I use it, so that's my preference. The spring in my rear blade arm isn't as "springy" as it used to be. If yours is the same, maybe you can get a new one and have them install it while they do the rust repair. I'm also curious as to how well the repair lasts.

Join the club. Mine has been like this for a few years and spreads each year. It's not rust, it's a chemical reaction between the paint and metal that causes the paint to bubble- this is what a body shop guy told me, never confirmed it though. I've been told that the only way to fix it is to strip the gate and repaint, to the tune of $450-600.
I am considering fixing it myself:
Sand it with 180 grit, until it's leveled out and the bubbled area is gone, then mask off a square, bigger then the sanded area and sand inside the entire square. Then I'll spray Zero-Rust on it, as it has been recommended by a buddy. Should look better than the bubbled mess I have now. Just need to work up the nerve to do it.

Aren't all your gates aluminum? Mine has some bubbles on the underside at the bottom, out of sight, but I thought is was rust starting. After I took the panel off to spray the entire inside with fluid film did I find out on this site the gates are aluminum. checked mine and sure enough, mine is. Won't rust but I, too, need to fix some bubbles.

Hmm....seems odd to have built both. Must have been a material pricing or processing issue....very strange.

Anyway, thanks for the info.
