Looks like most members here have biases against high mileage government fleet vehicles.
Personally, I own 2 decommissioned police Tahoe Z56, the one is 1999 model, and the other is 2007 model which was purchased recently, and both are from NY State Police auction.
The 99 model had 150K miles on its clock when I acquired it in 2002, I added another 70K miles since then. The only major repairing was a fuel pump and catalytic converter, plus some routine maintenance like fluid change, brake, tire and ignition.
So far, there is no engine or transmission job, no oil burning or leaking from both engine and tranny, even notorious intake manifold gasket problem still has not come to me yet. The engine and transmission are original ones from day one I bought the truck.
In NY State Police, the hi-way patrol vehicle has mandatory decommission policy when meeting 3-year and 150K miles service. The maintenance schedule is very restricted to the book, all replacement parts must be OEM which supplied by contracted car dealers selected via bidding processing.
As a buyer, if you are lucky, you could get a vehicle with a rebuilt engine or a rebuilt transmission not long ago before you purchase.
The bottom line, don’t be scared about high mileage. Mechanically, you don’t feel the difference comparing with lower mileage truck; cosmetically, those PPV trucks are rough, you can see scratches and dents all the corners.
