I agree that the decision is up to you. If you can get the body work done on the cheap and good, it sounds like a good deal. The best thing that you have going for you is the fact that you know the history (owner). When you buy it, you must do a build thread. We would all like to see it come back to life.

Have you checked on insurance? Some companies will not cover totaled vehicles. Also most banks won't finance a loan on anything with a salvage title or worse now.
Regardless it's your choice and if you like it do it and forget what people say.

Insurance companies total cars all the time for minor fender benders.

No, they don't. They total them because the amount of repair equals a great percentage of what the vehicle is worth undamaged. They do not write it a a total until its been torn down, and evaluated for hidden damages which bring parts and labor way up. That thing may have been worth $12k clean as a whistle. Its now 10 years old, and needs significant repair. "Put a used quarter panel on it." Do you even know whats entailed in doing so? Its not like you just stick the thing on. I know you think I'm being a dick, but I'm telling you, $4k for it as is, is too much. Yes you'll end up fixing it, but you'll have way too much in it, when you could have an undamaged, clean title vehicle in probably the same condition for less money.

I also am a body guy, and I agree with fiatdale and I wouldnt buy it, especially for that money. And I would love to see what you would do to put a used quarter on there.

And I would love to see what a body shop would do with $500-$800 on that quarter panel. It would be more screwed up than it is right now. I would actually hate to see what kind of hack shop would even attempt to 'fix' that quarter.Any respectable shop would laugh and turn you away. But good luck, I am very interested to see what happens.
