Here's the mystery.

A couple of weeks ago, I accidentally spilled oil on the hot engine and it briefly caught fire. No worries, put the fire out, and the car seems to be running fine.

However. The check engine light came on, with a P0335 (knock sensor) code. That was last week, and I decided to reset the code and wait to see if it stayed cleared. It didn't, so I cleared it again and ordered knock sensors.

Last night, my battery light came on when I first started it. Then the voltage meter was low, but it went away after I ran it for a minute or so. Today, the voltage meter kept "flicking" down to about 11v, but it would come back to 14 or so immediately. However, when I hit a bump, the CEL came on again at the same time there was a BIG drop in the voltage.

My question is, is it possible with all of this that there's some sort of short in the knock sensor harness? (FWIW, the fire was rather small, and located on the exhaust manifold, passenger side, about halfway down.) Should I replace the harness first, replace the knock sensor, or replace the alternator?

Or all three?

Thoughts?

Was this a real fire? As in......Did it melt stuff? Like the harness?

What condition is the harness in now?
