I keep seeing that a lot of problems with these trucks can be fixed by software updates to the computers. Is that something I can do with an off-the-shelf programmer or does a dealer have to do it?

Would it make sense to go to a dealer and request that they give me *all* the latest software updates? I have worked on personal computers for a long time, and am sort of OCD about applying the latest drivers/firmware/patches/updates on all my computers... the fact that I can't mess with the ones in my Burb is driving me nuts!

I have a friend that works at a local dealer and he always tells stories about the people that come in and demand updates they read about on the internet. According to him (shop forum) the customer is not entitled to an update unless there is a problem, that might be solved by an update.
HOWEVER, he said almost any car he works on for a problem gets an update before he starts. I am NOT a GM employee, but maybe you could get some routine maintenance done at your local dealer and as part of the agreement you could as the service writer to include updates, as they take 10-60 minutes (or so I am told).

Good luck!

Yeah, I'd rather give my money to an independent shop, but that's not a bad idea. I might just call around and see if any independents would be willing to give me the updates. It really seems like we should be able to do this ourselves though.
