Can you install a 2 speed transfer case in to a vehicle with a single speed?

I have a single speed transfer but, I would like to replace it with a two speed transfer case. Other than putting the new transfer case in and installing a 2 speed control switch inside is there a lot more that needs to be done.

Would it be a simple plug and play?

Would it require new wiring harness or sub harness for the electrical connections?

Would you be able to put another switch in the system and run the wires directly?

Will the ecu need to be flashed?

Has anyone on here done this swap?

You have a transfer case with awd or 4hi only? You want to swap to a transfer case that has 4hi and 4lo? Or are you wanting a doubler with the electronic equivalent of a twin stick? Either could be done, but would be a headache.

Shouldn't have to flash the ECU. Maybe TCU, but could probably get away with out it. Traction control may become a thing of the past. You would have to play with the encoder motor that switches the xfer case to figure out if you could control it with a simple switch.

Yes, I have a 4hi only and would like to switch to a hi/lo transfer. I was hoping to be able to install the transfer and a new switch... But most things seldom are that easy... lol

Hey James, I can't find a tag on the transfer case .. RPO sheet in glove box doesn't seem to help since I don't know what number I am looking at and what they mean...

I see your from the treasure coast... What city are you in. I grew up in Fort Pierce...

I'm pretty sure you have a Magna Power transfer case, should be MP3010. If the dimensions and hook ups for electrical and splines, etc. are the same, should be a direct swap. I looked for about thirty minutes and could not find any information on that case, was happy to just identify it!

Yes, I'm in PSL and Fort Pierce. Still in Florida or did you head elsewhere?

I lived in White City from 1962 to 2000 then in Socal for 10 years and now in Nevada I finally sold my house in White City last month. I still really like the area maybe someday I will return to retire there... lol

Hey, just remembered this thread when I was looking up information on doing this swap with my tahoe.

2010 is when GM changed transfer cases in all their 1500 drivetrains since the old case was having too many problems. This was also the year they changed the base model 4x4 to have the single speed transfer case and having the 2 speed as an optional extra.

Going into figuring this swap out for my tahoe was a bit challenging since there really wasn't a lot of info on the transfer cases. Knowing how car manufacturers operate was a big help. After finding out the 2 speed was an optional extra, I knew the wiring harness would all be the same so the factory could just install 1 wiring harness on the chassis and not have to change it again. Also the motor on the transfer case is changed by what voltage is sent to it and not having an extra wire, so that threw needing the wiring harness out. The selector switch is obviously different so I knew I would need that. The hard part was finding out if the TCU needed to be changed. After I looked up all I could about it I was under the impression they were all the same, but when I went to install the new case I found out they are different.

As to what you need for the swap, you will need the 2 speed case, oem 2 speed selector switch, and 2 speed TCU.

All the TCUs and cases should have the exact same electrical plugs. The only difference you will find is on the selector switch. Certain ones will have a little different shape with cut outs on the top of the plug so you will just have to make sure that the switch will fit your model suv.

All my parts came out of a 2012 z71 silverado and they all worked on my 2010 tahoe so any 1500 drivetrain out of any year model between 2010-2014 should work.

I was lucky to find a guy near where I live that parts 07 and newer GM trucks and suvs for a living so I was able to drive to him and do some testing to make sure everything worked.

All the parts together cost me $290. Obviously that's not installed, I did that myself. It only took me 2 hours since I had taken my transfer case out once before and I didn't need to jack my truck up since its already lifted 8".

If you have any more questions let me know.
