piston slap was a guess of mine. 190k on the body i have no idea whats on the engine, its not the original one. it was rebuilt not to long ago, it was very clean when i got it new freeze plugs and what not, guy i got it from said it had about 1000 miles on it, no paper work though. if i had to guess id say maybe 10k on it or a bit more

If there is no docs don't take it for granted ... I was told mine was "fresh" ... and when I dropped the trans there was silly-cone at the rear main seal and the flywheel was in backwards. My engine was spotless, I could have eaten off it. Every time I goto fix something it's factory stuff for sure ... I dunno what's up with that.

i dont really belive it was a "fresh" rebuild but i am completely sure its not the original engine. pretty sure is out of a 2 wheel drive. the oil filter is mounted up and down like the old chevys instead of sideways like it should be.
it runs just fine just that clattering noise bothers me. from what everyone is saying its probably piston slap but it is loud and lasts for quite a while when cold. but now with warmer weather it doesnt last as long anymore. it actually quits now by the time i make it to work. (about a mile)

so back to this hunt again, ive narrowed it down, i know its not exhaust i know its not a heat shield im 99% positive its a lifter/valve train noise, i hung my head out the window the other day when i heard it, does it the worst when its first started after sitting all night all the way till the engine is about warm and does it a bit when i first start it up when the engines half way warm. thinking valve adjustment? also this might be something else but it seems to have a random shake/miss to it when idling while its making this noise.
also you can faintly hear it when driving when its warm (well i think i can but i might be paranoid)
