Can't find fuel filter

I have to say after replacing a few fuel filters and tearing the old ones apart just to look, the in-tank ones are usually just a sock. I don’t see them filtering much except large particles. The replaceable ones seem much more capable of filtering small particles. I understand they wanted to cut costs and simplify things but this is one of those I wish they’d left alone along with the cabin air filters.
