I see this thread is a year old, but technology has changed drastically in the past year, and I thought it might be interesting to share what I did for a carputer.

Here is my carputer setup: http://www.flickr.com/photos/8513985@N03/7538348038/in/photostream

I am using a samsung galaxy tab in a 1.5 Din opening. I only had to file the bezel a little to make it fit.

I am sure in another year i will be upgrading to something else that is even more spectacular.

I would do a tablet. Acer iconia series are nice and have a usb port for flash drives. With my tab at 16g and thumb drive at 16g and a 32g sd card installed, i have more than enough space for all my tunes. wifi tether from my phone and i have netflix, youtube and pandora, etc.

"No Lock" by BoD + "Screen Off Timeout" by OzLab = perfect indash solution

i have mine set to never go to screen off while plugged in/charging. charge cable is on switched ignition so once i shut truck off then it allows it to go to screen sleep. no lock keeps it from locking, so when ignition is turned back on, screen wakes back up. BOOM

oh and they are both free :fuckyea:

Exactly what I want

A tablet (unless there is an easier solution) is exactly what I want to do. I have a stock 05 Tahoe w/o center console. The factory CD player died, front speakers need replaced. I want to basically do all the same functions (music/pandora/netflix/sling box) as my galaxy 3 onto the Tablet as a head unit. My kids just made travel sports and practices are long sitting in the car. Can someone, anyone post, pm, smoke signal me how to do this? "All inclusive" doudle dins aren't quite there yet and would start at $550 from what I found. I could just get the tablet set up and use my phone as a hot spot, correct???? Thanks in advance

yes, you can actually use a bluetooth connection from your phone to the tablet. im actually using a single din headunit for standard controls and amplification, the tablet just feeds into an aux input of it. that way i get normal radio and all that stuff, but my main display is the tablet
