I just bought a 2005 4wd chevy Tahoe. I've been noticing a little metal on metal vibration noise, that I believe I've pinpointed as the metal surrounding the cats is degrading/rusting and vibrating intermittently and I can hear it. I would just assume keep the same stock noise level, as it is not very loud, and my wife and I like that (its her daily driver). I don't really want to spend $1000+ from the dealer for stock replacements, and was wondering what others have done? I could just delete them completely, and go have the rear o2 sensors turned off, but I was concerned how much the noise level would be elevated by doing that. Any help is appreciated.

First, GM designs these to last the life of the vehicle. Does not mean they can't fail. I thought the CAT was bad on my SLT, I took it to a muffler speed shop. Why? They tested it. Turns out it was fine, and was a simple fix. Also a good speed shop is going to cut it out and drop a new one in. $200 bucks. While your' there, put a Magnaflow in, wives hate it, but the boys love it.

A few days ago a friend of mine asked me to check out his truck to see why it was rattling. Said it is quiet until it warms up. Once up to temperature, the rattling starts and he thinks it is the catalytic converter.

Factory cat with 200k+ miles
........So I get the truck off the ground. All four tires on wheel ramps so the vehicle is level....the way it is when it drives.
I start the engine from a cold start and there is no noise. Eventually the rattling began and was getting louder and louder as the vehicle was getting up to normal operating temperature.
I shut the engine off and get under the truck with a rubber hammer. I start banging stuff around.
The problem turned out to be that the factory exhaust pipe (where is slips into the Borla exhaust) was loose. The clamp was tight, but it did not apply enough clamping force to secure the two pipes. The clamp would not move at all......it had became stuck in place. The factory exhaust pipe is 2.25" diameter so I went to a local auto parts store and bought a 3.00" diameter clamp. I installed the new (bigger) clamp over the smaller clamp. I used my small cordless impact driver to tighten the bolts on the new clamp. Started the engine.....let it warm up and there was no more rattling noises.
Maybe this is similar to your problem. It's worth looking into.
NOTE:
There are two different size diameter exhaust pipe for Cadillac Escalade EXT. 2.25" and 2.75"......not sure what size diameter pipe are on other GM full size trucks/SUV's. Maybe same, maybe different.
