Damn! That's a lot of crap! Looks like your catch can is definitely doing its job. I run Mobil1 5w-30 with a Bosch extended duty filter and run my oil change intervals every 3-4k miles. I drain my catch can at each oil change and usually have about 2 ounces worth of junk come out of the catch can. Its like a mixture of oil and fuel that comes out. First the oil drains out and then what smells like old fuel, but looks like piss. Lol. I'm just glad that we're not recirculating all that crud back into the intake. Yours looks more like pure oil that the can caught. Mine looks different.

Wow! That much on a 2014??? I would have thought they'd have gotten the PCV system sorted by now. Damn glad I'm putting a catch can on my swap... Seems like one should come from the factory. Hopefully the can will prevent the rings from getting all gummed up.

Getting the DOD tuned out should have zero effect on oil consumption. (At least that's my humble opinion.) That said, I'll be tuning mine out for the first 1500 miles so the rings can break in with normal cylinder pressure. Just seems like a good idea to me.

I'm curious; is the oil in the can equal to how much oil you lost between changes?

Lol. Yeah, I know I change it too soon and could go much longer, but its just the way I like to do it. Plus, because of what I do for a living, it hardly costs me anything for the oil and filter, so I'm not wasting more than a few pennies by changing it out often like I do. Its worth the peace of mind knowing I'm always running fresh oil and filter.

I didn't realize his truck was a '14. I guess GM isn't bothered with repairing oil consumption issues, as this has been a problem for quite awhile. And I've heard from a few respectable members on this board that oil consumption was greatly decreased or even eliminated after disabling the AFM.

I've read that too, I just don't understand the mechanics of how disabling DOD would reduce oil consumption in the short run. I can see in the long run you might avoid gumming up the rings, but I'm hoping that a catch can will prevent that as well. Also, I think it's probably a big deal to disable it during break in. My guess is that GM doesn't automatically disable it during break in for CAFE reasons.

Interesting.

Another member here @pwtr02ss said that he had DOD disabled and it still used oil.

The cure was getting the updated valve cover.

I have the DOD on and the original valve cover, but catch can.

It does use oil. My 2011 does not use that much at all, the 2009 does... they had changed the covers over the years.

Yes, the DOD delete did not fix my oil consumption. My truck started smoking at start up after a long trip which made me think about the pcv system. Over long trips on the interstate, it would build pressure and blow oil around the piston. Changed the valve cover and left the DOD turned off. It's been about 15k miles and so far so good. I use conventional oil and change every 3k miles. If you run conventional, it will naturally break down after 4k miles.

Lots of others have had good luck with just turning it off. The reason it uses more oil when it's in 4 cyl mode is because the oil just sprays back up in the valve cover because the lifters are shut down, or well, just held open. That oil gets sucked backed through the pcv, clogging it over time, letting pressure build in the motor. The new motors have a lower volume oil pump to help with that. They no longer idle at 40 psi, more around the 25-30 range.

It was all oil from what I could tell, didnt smell any fuel in it.

I think I will be dialing it back to 4K max on this oil change, I use 5w-30 Castrol synthetic blend with a puralator filter.

I was surprised by the amount as well, yes is was pretty close to the amount I lost, so that was a good sign.

I believe the '14 have the updated valve cover in them, but I could be wrong.

Good to hear. I'd think then that the catch can should prevent the rings gumming up. I have a 2012 motor; I believe the late 2011s and later have the new valve covers...
