I have a 99 tahoe. yesterday on the way home, i noticed that my voltage gauge was moving back and forth and then noticed the battery light started to flash while sitting at the light. once i started going again, the battery light went away and the voltage gauge moved back over 14. i got home and put a volt meter on the battery and it read 14.26 and would drop to 13.89 and then back up to 14.12. it would keep doing this. you could see the light under the hood start to dim down when the voltage drops. my question is it the alternator or the battery that is going bad.

First check all connectors to see if you have good contact. Or just go to advance auto parts and have them put their tester on your truck and they should be able to narrow your problem down for you...

i know the voltage is good, but my question though is why such a drastic drop in voltage. almost .30 in voltage is dropped and then the battery light starts to flash on the dash. its not a bright flash, but at night you can see it starting to appear.

Your volatage regulator on your alternator is going...just change the alternator. Worse case scenerio get yourself to a sears 19.99 they check everything

1) Load Battery Test
2) Starter Test
3) Alt test
4) Check for any draws in the system

or pull your battery and bring it to Advance Auto or Sears they will load test!

.30 volts, Really!, You can get that just from turning the headlights lights on. But the warning light is fed from the alternator so go to a parts store and have the starting and charging system load tested it will most likely be free in cost. What are you waiting for/ We are all going to tell you to have it load tested to check for faults in the battery or alternators. BTW there are times when in idling my volts drops way more then that because of external load with out the warning light even starting to light. One other thing make sure your battery is not bulging out real bad around the sides.

Yeah, sounds like your alt is dying. You should have checked the voltage at the alt during idle to see where it was at. Sounds like its charging to a point but as soon as its under a load it starts failing. Definitely have it checked.
