Check engine light

Came on yesterday while I was on the highway and wouldn’t shift to the next gear. I pulled over. Turned off the car and restarted and everything works fine now but light is still on.

Can I check the code myself or do I have to go to a dealer? I’m out of town for the next few days so can’t visit my dealer. Also just out of warranty now at 37k on my 2016 Yukon Xl slt.
