Check Engine Light

My mechanic just told me that the check engine light on my 2005 Yukon 5.3 came on because of excessive noise in the engine. Apparently, there is a sensor in the engine that detect excessive engine noise. Has anyone experienced this? He said the noise could be due to weak gas or just the high mileage (177K) and to just ignore the light and drive the truck. I tried new gas but the light still came on. I could try higher octane.

I have the oil changed at 7k miles with synthetic oil and it only burns about 1/2 qt of oil between changes as it has done since new. I like the truck and plan to continue driving it unless I an looking at some future major engine work. BTW, he just changed the front brake pads at 177k but the back are still going strong. It truly is an amazing truck.

Any help will be appreciated.

Knock sensors? They can get moisture built up on them and the wiring harness. You have to pull the intake to replace them.

Knock sensors. Need to find out if they are picking up real knock or are they faulty. They aren't too hard to replace. Is the engine in good tune up condition?

Thanks for the replays. I don't know the code but will find out. It probably is due for new plugs which can be easily done. We live in Tampa, Florida and we've had an unusual amount of rain over this summer so that also could be an issue.p as well.
One item I should have mentioned which could be a factor is my oil gauge is bad and needs to be replace. Apparently that is a common problem with these trucks. Could that be a factor? It has been out for several months before the check engine light went on.

How do you know it was the oil pressure gauge that was bad?

The gauges on Tahoe's and Yukon's of this vintage have a history of bad gauges. My oil gauge is pinned to high pressure but will swing wildly back and forth depending on the weather. My temperature gauge is bad as well. There are kits available on the internet to replace the gauges along with the bulbs. The replacement bulbs are LED's. I am not sure that I want to invest the time to replace the gauges since next year is trade time.

Gauges as I'm sure you know are key indicators as to what's going on in there.

There is always the "idiot lights" to count on. Provided they illuminate as intended.

I appreciate the input from everyone. As it turns out, the check engine light went off after a long trip and new gas. I will assume that means that I picked up some bad gas somewhere.
