Ok, I have a question about the stock exhaust system and what will happen when I change it.

05 Tahoe, 5.3, stock everything except CAI. In going to get either the Flowmaster Series 70 or the Cherry Bomb Elite, but I know that neither one are a direct fit. Honestly the stock exhaust sounds good to me and is still in good shape, but I'm trying to get better performance for towing before I drop more money for gears, Black Bear, etc.

Stock setup is a single in, dual out at 2.75"from what I've read. Measurements back that up.

I'm probably going to go single in single out and lose the y-pipe behind the muffler, so my question is what is the y-pipe there for anyway? Does it give some sort of flow/sound benefit? With either muffler if I go dual out it goes down to 2.5"which I assume wouldn't work unless it fits inside the y-pipe outlets that are already there.

If there is a benefit I don't want to cut the y-pipe out- like I said I like the stock sound, I just want some power gain.

Thanks for the input.

Really not gonna get noticable gains .. long tube headers I think you would maybe intake then tune it after seems to be what most do on here

Well I went ahead with the Cherry Bomb Elite. Single in dual out to keep the same plumbing. I think it has one of the best exhaust notes I've heard. It's the perfect volume at idle and cruise, and sounds great throughout the rpm range. I'm not really interested in the headers- I hear they make it a lot louder and that won't do for our family vehicle-and I'm not sure about what the gains really are and if they're worth the trouble for me.

I know that for my application, simply adding the CAI and the Cherry Bomb made a noticeable difference towing our RV, which is what I was hoping for. I have more plans, but I'm doing my research first.

We have 33" A/T tires and they hurt the towing, but they look really good. Vanity has its price. The biggest help I can think of will be the 4.10 gears, up from 3.73, high flow cats, and then the Black Bear tune. I think that'll probably do it for me.

Headers will change the sound a little but making it louder isn't quite true. Most people that install headers usually upgrade everything else behind it. Larger more free flowing front y pipe different catalytic converter or removing that all together. Also upgrading the pipes from there back aswell. If you install headers namely shorty style headers for what your after they can. They can be purchased to bolt directly to your stock front y pipe leaving everything else behind it alone. Longtube headers can drastically change the exhaust sound and level especially since at that point you are forced to go dual exhaust or a totally new style y pipe and such. Btw high flow cats will probably make it louder.

I would look at long tube headers and a tune and stick to a single 2.5 inch exhaust. You can do cats or delete them, nor buy cats with resonators I place of the cats so it looks like you have cats in place. The headers and a tune will probably net you somewhere in the 20-40 horsepower range and it won't be loud. I purchased the OBX headers from eBay for $300 with resonators in place of the cats . It bolted up great and picked up a pretty solid amount of power. My truck with 3.42s and 32" tire put down 301/356, but I've done a cam and intake swap as well.
