Hey all,

The consensus regarding my rough idle seems to be that I need to clean the throttle body. Just a question regarding that process: Can I manually move the TB "vane" with a shop rag? That is, if I'm trying to clean all of the surfaces of it, can I get to the backside of the vane by simply pressing on it by hand and opening it that way? Or, is there some other mechanism by which I can move it and "work" it?

I'm assuming that this gets done with the engine off -- but I also assume that I can clean the TB with the TB still on the truck. I don't have to remove it, do I?

Any insight is appreciated. Thanks!

Yes, you can move the vein by hand, but I recommend removing it completely from the truck (as simple as removing intake tube, 2 bolts, and 2 nuts. Be gentle. Don't forget to unplug it. The tb cleaner is alcohol based and should be allowed to completely evaporate before reinstalling on the truck. When I cleaned mine I found that steal wool helped break up the carbon.

MAF = Mass Air Flow sensor. Going from the airbox to the throttle body, it is the first part of the intake tube. Just look for the electrical wires. It's cleaned in the same manner as the throttle body, with its own special cleaner. Just remove from truck, spray, and let air dry.

Assuming you cleaned your TB this w/e, have you noticed any change in the rough idle??

Thanks again for the replies, folks.

Yes, I did clean the TB (and had cleaned the MAF previously). I DO notice that the idle is better. I'd say that I'm not yet through the "relearn" process (I've read that you need to put some miles on the truck after the cleaning for things to REALLY even out), but it's better.

I still have something funky going on with deceleration (no brakes, and no gas) where it can feel like the truck is bucking, but I don't have a good sense what it can be, given that the injectors and TB and MAF have all been cleaned (and the dealer said there was no history of a misfire or anything when they checked the ECM)...

Engine bucking, or brake peddle/steering wheel bucking? Additionally, have you tried running a fuel injector cleaner? If not, I recommend Marvel Mystery Oil. 8oz. of that with 20gal. of gas will start to help things out.
