I want to check and change my transfer case fluid. I called the local GM dealership to ask what I need to use in my push button shift 4wd 1997 Tahoe. They said it looks like I need to use AutoTracII in the transfer case.

Here is where it gets interesting,,, in my owners manual ( I bought it on ebay) for 1997 Tahoes and Suburbans it says I need to use ATFIII fluid.

Also,, the parts guy said if I drain my fluid and it is red like ATFIII I could replace it with AutoTracII with no problems.

What do you all use or have in your transfer cases?? What do you think about this? Thanks again.

if it push button 4x4 with no Auto 4wd option (so only 3 buttons, 2hi, 4hi, 4lo), then dexron 3 atf is fine to use (thats normal auto trans fluid). if it has the auto 4wd option then autotrac is a must.
and the other question, yes you can use auto track as substitue for atf (its pointless due to cost though), but not the other way around.
