Hello, I'm doing coolant change today. Most people said they drained about 4 gallons old coolant out by removing lower hose. How come I drained only about 1-1/2 gallons. Where is the rest of the coolant?

I did the following steps:
-Drain from lower hose
-Fill water
-Run engine 10 mins with high heat on
-Drain
-Fill water
-Run engine 10 mins with high heat on
-Drain
-Fill 50/50 mix coolant

After fill about 1-1/2 gallons with engine on, the reservoir is full.
Did I do wrong? Thank you very much.

get 2 bottles of this:

and this kit below:

http://www.prestone.com/prestone®_flush_n_fill_kit

Instruction on in the products and the top of each product page.

Drain and properly dispose of old coolant. Use the flush kit and back lush the remaining old out and fill with flush chemical and water run for required time with as much air bled out as possible like describe below when refiling and then back flush system again until there is just water. Flush and empty out your coolant reservoir. The refill with Dex-cool coolant and water. You may have about a gallon of water still in there and the system with a/c carries 5 gallons so put 3.5 gallons of straight coolant in. It will get you the best freeze and boiling point temperatures. It will not go in all at once the best way to get the most in there at first it to remove the thermostat housing and stat slowly fill the radiator until you get the level right up to about 1/4" below the gasket seat. Get a new 195 degree stat and gasket and reinstall the housing. continue to fill while squeezing out air from the upper hose as much as possible. Start engine and add some more if the level drops more when it starts to rise out of the cap opening reinstall it. Fill your reservoir to the hot line the first time. drive with your heater system on for a bit making sure the system gets hot and let it sit and cool for a long while. As it cool it will take coolant from the reservoir to fill the air gaps inside that bleeds out over time. It will take two or three complete hot cold cycles to get the last of the air out. Keep an I on the reservoir and never let it get below the hot or cold marks. check it before you drive and after. Make sure to keep your heater on during all these processes. Put fan on lowest setting and temp on hot setting. Do not move fan switch to off position. Eventually it will be maintaining the levels with out having to add more coolant. And keep a pre-mix 30 water/70 coolant supply around.

As about as good as it gets for a clean system.

Does that help?
