Coolant Hose Change

Aloha Y’all,

Does anyone know how to get the remaining cooling hose part off at the firewall? Appreciate any help or suggestions before I screw it up further. Mahalo for your assistance concerning this matter. Aloha!

you probably already got them off. but there's basically 2 ways. some just cut them off to save the hassle since they are being replaced anyways. Just don't damage the aluminium pipe inside.

if you can push the fitting back, reach back and squeeze the tabs at the red arrow, it is supposed to release the tabs at the green arrow and pull off

easier said then done sometimes.

i think its like 14-15bux off amazon. one of those stupid tools you dont think you need. but fight with the hose end for an hour or break the end off your heater core and then try telling me its not worth it

That part that broke is part of the hose and not the tee itself. You will need that new piece plus the 2 tees.

must be 2 different kinds of gm heater hose quick disconnects. mine was the pic I posted. that tools isn't working for those. latching part is separate. it goes behind the lip on the pipe.

it slides over the pipe and opens up whatever tabs are there wider than the lip on the pipe. the plastic tabs also just get caught on the lip of the aluminum pipe

all I can say is I promise you the fire wall heater Ts are not coming off my truck with that tool. that would do nothing by engage the tabs harder.

I tried 3 different tools to remove those Tees, and all were not successful. As such, I cut them off. I did not try, however, the method of pushing the Tees in on the aluminum tube and twist and then squeeze the 2 tabs to separate.

@bill1013 , I was in the same boat as you a few years ago, when my hose shredded, right at the Tee, just like yours did. When you change out the Tees, be sure to wear gloves, as the firewall insulation is quite aggressive, and your hands will itch for days. Also, try to get GM OEM Tees, as some folks have not had good luck with the Dorman aftermarket replacements.

Last, while you are changing the Tees, you should also change out ALL the radiator and heating and overflow tank hoses, as they deteriorate with the heat inside the engine well. Typically, you can see the manufacture date stamped on the hoses, and I'll bet that your hoses are original.
