The 14 volts when running tells you your alternator is good.
The 7 volts not running suggests the battery is bad.
If it said 12 volts but couldn't start, i would say check your connections, but more than likely especially with a 6 year old battery it's probably time for a new one.
If you have a multimeter, measure the DC voltage (make sure you only measure voltage, to not melt/destroy the meter) from one battery terminal to the other.
If the battery is reading 7 volts, have the battery tested at auto parts store.
If it's 11-12V range you have a connection issue or similar. Usually a loose connection will restrict current and shouldn't affect the voltage measurements, BUT that low current can play all kinds of tricks on the computers.
