Hi,

My Denali has what appears to be a stress crack in the rear quater, which I have been informed is very common on the Yukons. Apparently, it's caused by movement of the lower portion of the fender. Please see pics.

I backed into another car last summer caving in this same rear quarter, which was repaired soon thereafter. I assumed this is related to that accident and repair, however, the body shop claims this is common and not related. I have tried searching on here and Google, and can find no discussion of this as a commomn issue. Moreover, in the 10 years I have ow ned the Denali, I have had never heard/read of this being an issue.

Has anyone experienced this or familiar with this being an issue?

Thanks very much in advance.

Result from the crumpled quarter. It's normal for the crack or tear to happen at that spot as I have seen it before. The body shop should have welded it and grind it down. They were lazy and just put putty over it, resulting in the crack returning quickly. I'd take it back and have them repair it correctly free of charge to you under warranty.

Thank you. So, it is normal, but is it normal when there's damage to the quarter, or is it normal even in the absence of damage? The body shop said it's unrelated to the initial damage. Furthermore, when repairing the quarter, should this area always be welded bc it's likely to crack eventually?

The damage to the quarter was limited to the lower portion of the quarter, so this area was not affected. However, it seems too coincidental to have cracked now. I am not a body repairman, but seems likely this is a result of the initial damage, or the repair which included pulling the crumpled area back into shape with a tool/machine. Additionally, as you mention this area definitely received some attention during the repair, bc the inside curves of the quarter right next to crack are not the same as the passenger side.

Thanks again, it's really appreciated.

No, it is a direct result of the shoddy repair. The crack happened as stress resulting from the repair and/or the initial accident. Even though it happened below that body line, the pressure built up from the limited amount of space between the bottom of the quarter where it is rolled and spot welded into the inner quarter and that deep angle on the body line. Sort of how you fold a paper in half before you tear it so it will tear straight. The least they should do is split the cost of the repair, but in my opinion should be covered on their note.
