So, this is supposed to be manual mode, right? Set the gear you want and just use the massive torque to trundle down the highway? My Tahoe downshifts if I push the gas much at all to speed up and it's annoying.

It’s not a gear selector, but rather a range limiter. It only sets the maximum gear, but allows automatic downshifts.

Fix it? What do you mean? The range selector is working as intended it limits your highest gear you can use, while shifting through the gears as it sees fit ddepending on your driving needs.

I want to choose the gear, the way every other manual gear select I've driven works. It's a diesel. It doesn't need to shift so much.

The gm vehicles i own dont select the gears like. My '11 and '16 gm rides have the L/M mode and it is a range limiter so it only goes up to the highest gear selected. So this has been done for quite a while like this at least for gm suvs and trucks. Only thing i can suggest is to run in tow haul mode, but even then its still going to shify when it needs to. What terrain are you running in? How is your throttling? Gentle, heavy? And also, the shifting is to keep it in its power band/help woth feul economy. What terrain you drive and how you drive it also effects how it shifts.

Yeah, like I said, I should have researched more. Couldn't have changed it, but at least I would have known.

It's all about diesel. Torque for the empty truck is high and broad. I don't need more revs and more fuel consumption to maintain speed, but it shifts anyhow, no matter how gentle I am on the acceleration. It's not like I'm in sport mode. The problem is the shift programming isn't optimized for the engine. What I want it to do is optimize fuel in the gear I choose. The problem is there is all this software for the government and the car manufacturers and not for us. I drive a stick and drove big rigs in college. They don't care what I think. Just a fact.

Crossing fingers Banks provides a true gear select option, since they understand diesels.

I had not noticed this unwanted feature, at least not until now. In MHO, I think my ten-speed auto tranny is always in the right gear for the conditions. I can shift a manual better than, say, a four or even six speed auto, but this ten seems to get it right for me every time. (Think of the two-speed powerglide.)

Still, I agree with what you're saying. The car is not fully under the driver's control. Forget that the brakes and steering are electronic (makes me crazy thinking about that). There's a pollution control system I don't want much, an automatic on off, an On Star that I can't turn off but that can be used by the police and the manufacturer to shut down my engine remotely.
