Yes, the tcase is different in the 03+ models. 01 and 02 are the same though, no changes between those two years. I think that its going to pretty much boil down to the mileage. Of course you'd want to get the newest one you can get, but if you can find a low mileage clean 01, jump on it.

The 99-00 obs denali trucks with the 5.7 are terrible in comparison to the 01+.

They're old, the L31 5.7 pales in comparison to any lsx engine, the front tires stick out 1.5" more than the rears, the interiors aren't nearly as nice, transmissions weren't as strong, leaf spring rear suspension rides harsh compared to coils, worse mileage, less availability for aftermarket parts, etc.
