Wife and family smelled a weird burning smell in the cabin yesterday. Said it was very strong. I wasn’t home but a friend checked the oil and the dipstick was totally dry. They put in 5 qts of oil but the dipstick still reads dry. I got home this morning to take a look and make sure everything was fine and the dipstick is 100% dry. Literally not even a film on it after multiple checks. Any idea what could be going on? We have a small oil leak but nothing that would cause something like this to happen.

Is there a huge puddle of oil on the ground under the engine? (I kid, but you know.....)

Is the dipstick tip broken?

Is the dipstick tube broken where it sticks into the block, causing the dipstick to not going into the block/oilpan?

Try cracking open the drainplug for a half-second to ensure there's oil in there. It's not like the oil just teleported to Dimension-X.

If the crankcase was truly empty and you added 5qts it wouldn’t show up on the stick. Probably need 7 before it would even show.

This doesn’t sound good….. I’m sure you know how to use a dipstick. If not bring(meaning tow) it to a dealer asap lol. Don’t run that engine with low oil.

The 2007-2014 motors are 6 qt systems. 5 qts should show on the dipstick.

Even a qt low would it be bone dry?

Look at the dipstick hashed area. It only dips into the very top of the crankcase. So yeah if you're possibly even a qt low it won’t show up…. Definately 2 qts low would be bone dry.

We have any dipstick 101 tutorials anywhere? Lol

And let me back up and assume your on a level surface and doing this with the engine off after a minute right?
