Distributor

Does anyone know or has anyone heard of gm having problems with distributors in the 90s,i was told that they had problems with the shaft or gear picking up oil and getting it into the distributor it self causing it to corrode the contacts making it start hard and miss and just run funny just want to know if this is true thanks in advance
