Do I need to do the free travel mod??

I just lowered my 03 denali with mcgaughys 2/3 drop. Very happy with with it but I went to take a ride with some friends and with weight in back it bottoms out even when I removed the original bumpstops. I read a few threads on here saying I can just take a sawzall to the bracket and cut it right off, is that true? And I assume I need a grinder after cutting them off?
