I recently purchased a 2007 Z71 Tahoe that I love. However, I am concerned about this airbag recall that has been open since 2016 without resolution.

I have done a lot of research and to generalize, it seems GM says their airbags are safe. Yet others say these airbags still have the root issue of Ammonium Nitrate without a drying agent.

Just wanted to see what yalls thoughts are on this issue as it is very concerning to me? Also, Ive called around and it costs about 1100 bucks to get the passenger airbag replaced but the unit that would be installed is the same model as the one that is currently in our trucks.

airbag company's went **** up, there is nothing else to replace it with except a identical one, better to have something that will probably save your life and "maybe" hurt you a little than just die from your head impacting the dash/window/steering wheel, seat belts only do so much.

obviously at your own risk

if your that worried you can disable the air bag by pulling the weight sensor from the seat /.

Don't cut the wires it will throw air bag codes..

this will fool the system into thinking there is "no passenger" or not enough weight

Does yours have those Tekata airbags? I kept getting notices but mine does not have those identified in the recall.

Not worried about it in the least, the possibility is so remote it's not worth bothering with.

it's against Federal law to sell recalled items so they do have replacements that are "not" recalled it will more then likely have the same part number but with a revision number i.e A, B, C or 1 2 or 3...

The RISK IS VERY HIGH in

High humidity states are the most effected by them
such as Florida Hawaii , Texas etc. Guif coast states

They should have issued Silca Gel packs for people to have in the effected vehicles in High humidity states

there is reusable dehumidifier on ebay that you can use....

I live in central Texas and this is where the vehicle has spent its life, so you could say I'm in the “danger zone” if there is one..

I did a lot of digging around and found there are two part numbers for the passenger airbag in our Tahoes. I will put them below, but from what i am finding, the part number beginning with “1” is discontinued and replaced by the one beginning with “2”. I cannot find any definitive info on when these part numbers changed, but I suspect there is a good chance this is the “revised” airbag that GM says they do not have yet for the recall.

Part #s:
GM Part No.: 15883207
Gm Part No.: 25812355

I ordered 25812355 and will check the manufacturing date on it, hopefully it is around or after ‘16 when the recall came out. Once my current airbag is removed I plan on checking the model number on it to see if it is a “1” model.

just keep your receipt so you can get a refund when they actually do get sued and replace the air bag GM really did set them selfs up for a mega sized lawsuit when someone gets killed..

don't worry they can't sell recalled items it's illegal as the consumer protection law adds significant liability

as you can see this recalled one is PRIMED and ready to explode like a IED right n your face
as you can see the rust that means it was exposed to heavy amounts of moisture

Thanks for the reply, I assume you have had yours replaced per the picture? If so, what is the part number of the one in the pic? I cant seem to make out the last few digits. Also, Did you install a bag with the “2” model number?

There’s been about zero of these in our SUV’s going off. They’re supposedly different than the ones that have exploded, made to GM specs. They have been tested ballistically and also in the field with zero failures, even the rusty ones from the high humidity areas of the country.

“In the filing, GM says the front-passenger inflators were custom-made for its trucks by Takata with bigger vents and stronger steel end caps than other inflators. No truck inflators have blown apart on roads or in extensive laboratory testing, the company says.”

Thats all good and well but it does not say anything to the underlying root issue that is making these airbags explode. Ammonium Nitrate without a drying agent. Its fair that none have gone off, but GM is not addressing the fact that this design is uncontrollable. Add 10-15 more years of age temperature cycles and humidity and lets see if any have defected. Literally the manufacturer that made the airbag says they are not safe, but the company that bought the air bags says they are not, i would rather believe the folks that built them.

I can respect that the design is safer, but they are neglecting to address the primary issue which is instability. I cant find the article right now, but I did stumble across data that showed these airbags have already started expanding on actuation which is the first step to them exploding.
