Stopped for gas tonight and couldn't open the door on my '99 Tahoe. Powered down the window and the door opens from outside.

Suggestions/remedy? I'm a reasonably intelligent guy, but a much better fishing guide and carpenter than auto mechanic!

Door won't open

OK, I probably can buy a new door handle assembly locally. The question, since I'm not really a very accomplished auto mechanic, is how I go about pulling off the door panel, disengaging the power lines for the lock and windows, and generally accomplishing this task in 10 minutes?

It's been my unfortunate experience that when I get into a project like this one, Mr. Murphy invariably bangs on my door (and my patience). I surely would appreciate a bit of step-by-step.

Thank you,
Capt. Tony

new handle mine broke too.. no rivet needed. you have to slide it toward the rear of the truck and once its in mine didnt move and no problems with not putting a screw in there or a rivet where there was one stock

how to...

first theres 2 7mm bolts in the arm rest unscrew then
then around the handle theres a plastic trim piece you need to pop that off too
then i poped up the door controls with a screw driver and unplug them and the tweeter
then remove the door light and unplug and push plug through panel
i used a big screw driver but a panel tool will work better. some new clips would be good to ge while your at it too. they may break. pop all the clips out and push the panel up the get it off the ridge it rests on right at the window
drill out the rivet and the handle will slide towards the front of the truck
unhook the two rods and reverse.

just did this last sunday real easy

pop off handle surround. pull out switch panel, unplug. pop off door panel and lift up to get out of window channel. drill out rivet. slide handle forward. take out both rods from handle. assemble in reverse.
